Coral

Fragging Away a Saturday Afternoon

frags at KalypsosOne man’s chore is another man’s fun! I’m spending the day up at my friend’s reef shop, Kalypso Aquatics, lending a hand and learning a bit more about the hobby while we’re at it. I love coming up since Elliott give me the change to hack frag some corals.

Today he had a few colonies that looked ripe for cutting. One colony of Acroproa efflorescene was looking like one side was starting to experience rapid tissue necrosis (RTN) and I went about cutting it into smaller frags to see if we can save some pieces. The frags look good, so we’ll see how they rebound.

Looking into frag tank, there was a nice big colony of Tubbs birdsnest that I cut back a bit and made some nice frags. This is definitely a nice looking birdsnest with nice green color and purple/pink hues and the tight branching you find in the birdsnest.

A few colonies over I decided to frag off some pieces of an Acropora caroliniana (bottlebrush acropora). This is one nice looking coral with a deep but bright green hue with a slight tinge of blue under the tank’s 20,000K metal halides.

The final coral I took to the clippers was another acropora I could not identify. Appears to be a to be a bushy type of acro with a nice green color but lighter than the A. caroliniana.

Finally, some nice wads of super glue on the fingers to make the day of fragging complete. Now the question is, which frag do I take home…..oh the decisions!
