Valentine’s Day at Steinhart Aquarium

Our family is going to spend Valentine’s Day at the new California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, including the Steinhart Aquarium home to 38,000 live animals from around the world, representing more than 900 separate species. The new building opened in October 2008 and will be our first time going there. Should be a fun day and I am especially looking forward to the 212,000 gallon Philippine Coral Reef.

Not only does the Academy boast this great tropical reef, but it also has a 100,000 gallon Northern California Coastal exhibit. In case you have never seen an exhibit of the coastal region of California it is quite amazing. Being a cold water region it may not have the white sands and blue waters of the tropical Pacific, there are plenty of colorful and unique species in this area.

There are also plenty of hands-on science exhibits and should be a remarkable day. I do plan on browsing most of the building but it’ll be hard to pry me away from the Steinhart Aquarium!

I plan on taking plenty of pictures and notes. Maybe I’ll break down the trip overall in one post and then take the time to give more detailed recaps of each of the exhibit areas. We’ll see but will definitely have plenty of material to share.

  1. I’d love to read a post-visit summary of your experiences along with any pictures you might share (if they allow you to shoot any, that is). I learned of the Steinhart Aquarium from a colleague and would love to read a fellow hobbyist’s take on the new venue.

  2. Jeffry,

Definitely was cool but WAY crowded. We got there no more than an hour after they opened and there was a LONG line to get in plus the planetarium shows and Bugs3D shows were sold out at that time.

Honestly at this point, I’d either go at one of their “After Dark” events on Thursday night I believe. Its from 5pm – 10pm and is 21+, will give you the chance to check it out without so many people.

The coral reef will look wonderful in about 5 years. It has lots of fish but needs coral grow out.
